Question 1 Easy 2 marks
Solve \(4t - 2 = 2t - 4\)[2]
Show the answer and mark scheme Answer: \(t = -1\)
M1 for \(2t = -2\) oe (terms in \(t\) on one side and numbers on the other) A1 for \(t = -1\) Worked solution: \(4t - 2 = 2t - 4\) \(2t = -2\) \(t = -1\)
Question 2 Medium 3 marks
Solve \(10 - 4(y - 3) = y + 27\) You must show all your working.[3]
Show the answer and mark scheme Answer: \(y = -1\)
M1 for expanding the bracket correctly: \(10 - 4y + 12 = y + 27\) M1 for \(5y = -5\) oe A1 for \(y = -1\) Worked solution: \(22 - 4y = y + 27\) \(5y = -5\) \(y = -1\)
Question 3 Hard 4 marks
Solve \(\frac{2n + 11}{5} - \frac{n + 13}{2} = -4\) You must show all your working.[4]
Show the answer and mark scheme Answer: \(n = -3\)
M1 for multiplying every term by \(10\) (or a multiple of \(10\)), e.g. \(2(2n + 11) - 5(n + 13) = -40\) M1 for expanding the brackets correctly, e.g. \(4n + 22 - (5n + 65) = -40\) M1 for \(-n = 3\) oe A1 for \(n = -3\) Worked solution: \(2(2n + 11) - 5(n + 13) = -40\) \(-n - 43 = -40\) \(-n = 3\), so \(n = -3\)
